In 2014, after seizing Shingal, the ISIS extremists murdered more than 500 Yezidis and kidnapped thousands of women and girls. Thousands of refugees still remain in a deserted coalmine by the Iraqi-Turkish border. They are trying to ransom their kidnapped daughters, wives and sisters.
